Liverpool’s Natasha Jonas Makes History as Two-Weight World Champion with TKO Victory over Kandi Wyatt
Liverpool’s Natasha Jonas became the first British female boxer to win world titles in two weight divisions after she stopped Canada’s Kandi Wyatt in the seventh round of their fight at the M&S Bank Arena on Saturday night. Jonas, who already held the WBA super-featherweight belt, moved up to lightweight to challenge Wyatt for the vacant WBC title and delivered a dominant performance that ended with a TKO victory.
Jonas started the fight aggressively, landing crisp combinations and body shots that troubled Wyatt, who tried to keep her distance and use her jab. Jonas was relentless in her pursuit, cutting off the ring and trapping Wyatt on the ropes several times. Wyatt showed her toughness and resilience, but she could not match Jonas’ speed, power and accuracy.
In the seventh round, Jonas unleashed a barrage of punches that forced Wyatt to take a knee. Wyatt beat the count, but Jonas sensed her opportunity and went for the finish. She landed a devastating left hook that sent Wyatt to the canvas again, and this time the referee waved off the fight.
Jonas celebrated her historic achievement with her team and her fans, who gave her a raucous ovation. She thanked them for their support and dedicated her win to her daughter, Mela. She also praised Wyatt for being a worthy opponent and a great champion.
Jonas said she was proud of making history and breaking barriers for women’s boxing. She said she wanted to inspire the next generation of female fighters and show them that anything is possible. She also said she was open to fighting anyone in either weight division, and mentioned Katie Taylor, Terri Harper and Mikaela Mayer as potential opponents.
Jonas improved her record to 11 wins, one loss and one draw, while Wyatt suffered her second defeat in 12 fights. Jonas also became the third British boxer, male or female, to win world titles in two weight classes after Ricky Hatton and Carl Frampton.
